Rolex Ref 6239 First Series Cosmograph Daytona, Silver Dial, All Original, Warranty Papers and Box, 1964
This 1964 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6239 is a complete and well-preserved example of one of the very first series of the Rolex Daytona. The package is complete with its original box and warranty papers.
The Cosmograph Daytona line was launched in 1963, and this watch was made before Rolex co-branded the model “Daytona” on the dial after the famous 24hr race. One of the distinguishing features of ref 6239, and later ref 6241, was that the dial featured many changes and variations with respect to the placement and color of the Daytona name. This experimentation gave each watch within the 6239 range individuality. The most famous version of the 6239 is the Paul Newman model with the exotic Singer dial.
The case measures 37 mm and shows no signs of polish. Only superficial signs of wear are present consistent with age. To be sure, the crisp and symmetrical lugs exhibit gentle signs of use; but there are no deep scratches or dings to mention. The original black factory enamel of the early base-300 bezel is mostly intact. The pump pushers are correct and original.
The serial numbers on the side of the case are totally crisp and legible.
The Early Dial
The silver sunburst early Cosmograph dial with matte black sub-dials is in near mint condition with normal signs of age. No oxidation or fading present. The tritium lume plots are all present and have achieved a golden-yellow patina. The lume plots exhibit no degradation whatsoever, which is rare for dials of this early period.
The extra-long hour hand, which was only made for the first generation of the Cosmograph, is original and free of any defect. The white sub-dials hands are original to the watch and feature the "slender" running seconds hand that is correct for the early Daytonas with Valjoux 72B movements.
The watch comes complete with its original green Rolex box and hand-written Rolex guarantee paper, which is correct for this era.
CALIBER 72B
The Valjoux 72 B caliber evolved from the 72 A basic caliber and was later renamed 722. It was produced from 1960 to about 1967. This represents a transitional period with the introduction of the Microstella regulation mechanism.
