Rolex Ref 1675 GMT Master, 18k Gold, “Nipple Dial”, 1969
Rolex Ref 1675 GMT Master, 18k Gold, “Nipple Dial”, 1969
This is a very clean example of an 18k yellow gold Rolex Ref 1675 GMT Master with “Nipple Dial” from 1969. The dial is a warm chocolate brown with outstanding gilt lettering. The original aluminum bezel is also in excellent condition. The original gold jubilee bracelet is in full length and without excessive stretch.
The GMT Master was introduced in 1954 with a Bakelite bezel, and shortly thereafter the yellow gold model was presented. While the GMT Master, like the Submariner and the Explorer, is a tool watch, Rolex also meant for it to be worn by senior business executives flying across different time zones. For that reason, the GMT was the first Rolex sport model to be released with a precious metal case and a fancy Jubilee bracelet. This is not only a beautiful combination of style and function, but the gold gives the watch an unmistakable heft.
We think of watches more as an acquisition of passion than as an investment; but we do think vintage gold Rolex sports watches represent value because the gold production numbers were so low compared to stainless steel. Relative to dial and bezel features of the GMT, the market has been slow to price in the rarity of the metal.
The 40mm case is in nice vintage condition without any deep scratches or dings. It shows signs of previous light polish, but the lug and case are strong with original proportions. Serial and reference numbers are clearly visible on the side of the case.
Case back is original, with clearly legible stamps indicating reference number 1675 and manufacture date. The crown guards are pointed, which is consistent with the early GMT. The crown guards retain their original shape. The glossy gilt printed dial is near-perfect with a warm patina, and beautiful matching veneer between tritium hands and dial elements.
Movement is automatic, Rolex 1575, two time zone with 24 hour bi-directional bezel. The watch runs on a 27-jewel movement, 19,600 vph, with a straight-line lever escapement, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and free-sprung monometallic balance adjusted to heat/cold and 5 positions. The movement is clean and unscratched.
