Among the most significant perpetual calendar wristwatches of the modern era, the reference 3940 marked Patek Philippe’s return to serially produced ultra-thin perpetual calendars and defined the manufacture’s aesthetic language for decades to follow. Introduced in the mid-1980s and initially produced only in yellow gold, platinum examples appeared only later and in far smaller numbers. A specimen from 1992 represents an early and desirable example of platinum production.
At its heart is the revolutionary self-winding caliber 240 Q, whose ingenious off-center 22K gold micro-rotor allowed the perpetual calendar mechanism to be housed within an exceptionally thin movement. This elegant technical solution made possible the refined proportions that would become a defining characteristic of the reference.
Preserved in excellent condition, the case retains crisp edges and sharply defined hallmarks to the flank—details that suggest minimal polishing and careful ownership. Rarely encountered in such honest state of preservation, this early platinum reference 3940P represents an important and increasingly collectible expression of Patek Philippe’s modern perpetual calendar.
The watch is offered with Extract from the Archives, presentation box, and original platinum buckle.
