I have collected watches for 40 years and hundreds of timepieces have passed through my hands. I sometimes ask myself, hypothetically, if I could own only one single watch what would it be?
In my opinion, this Patek Philippe ref 5140P is a strong contender: it is manufactured by the industry’s most exclusive brand; it is a complete perpetual calendar; it is encased in platinum and is perfectly sized at 37.3 mm; it runs on one of Patek’s most significant movements (ultra-thin, self-winding, micro-rotor-powered caliber 240Q); it’s a discontinued neo-vintage model. To be sure, it is an expensive watch; but it costs less than many of the novel brands that have come on the market recently. As far as aesthetics and value, it is sure to transcend the test of time.
Patek 5140 is the follow-up to the iconic ref 3940 introduced in 1986, which is considered to be one of the most important pieces in Patek’s modern history – along with the 3970, the first serially produced truly complicated timepiece. In 2006, Patek upgraded ref 3940 with a slightly larger, more contemporary and versatile 37.3 mm case and incorporated bolder and more legible fonts on the dial.
The model we are offering comes with a striking blue dial. This model is now discontinued, and the blue dial is a rarity among Patek’s complications. Only a handful of ref 3940s were made with a blue dial as homage pieces for the Patek Salon in London, and those cost well over $200,000 in the secondary market. Without any bias, this Ref 5140 is better proportioned than its more expensive brother because the larger dial better accommodates the bold data font.
