Omega Speedmaster Professional Ref 105.012-66 ‘CB Case’, Iconic Reference in Excellent Condition, Circa 1967
Omega launched the first Speedmaster model CK2915 in 1957; but it was not until Ref 105.012 was introduced in 1964 that the "Professional" designation appeared on the dial. Omega upgraded its previous Ref 105.003 with a larger 42mm case, twisted lugs, and guards to protect the winding crown and the chronograph pushers from impact. The reference kept the legendary manual wound Ref 321 developed by Albert Piguet of Lemania as its engine.
This is a pre-Moon landing specimen of the Speedmasters worn by the early astronauts, including Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong when he became the first human to set foot on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
The Rare “CB Case”
Omega used two different casemakers for the 105.012. Most Speedmasters feature cases made by Huguenin Frères, but another company named La Cetrale Boîtes of Bien “CB” made a number of cases for only this Omega Speedmaster reference. The defining characteristic of the CB case is the wide and flat section on the top of the lugs, sometimes referred to as the twisted flat lugs. The subtle difference, when studied side-by-side against the usual Huguenin Frères, is clearly visible and notable. The example we have here features a “CB Case” and the flat section on the top of the lugs is clearly visible.
Condition
This watch is in amazing condition and a pleasure to wear. The case is strong and appears unpolished: we normally hesitate to state that a watch of this age is unpolished, but the twisted flat lug on this “CB Case” is completely original and intact.
There are light scratches present all over the case, consistent with its age and function as a tool watch, but no deep scratches of chips to report. The dial and hands are original with consistent patina. The “dot-over-nine” DON bezel insert is original and in very good condition.
Original bracelets and authentic end-links on this model have become impossible to find, because many have gotten damaged and destroyed over time. This watch comes with its original bracelet in particularly good shape without significant stretching and with the correct 516 end links.
The dial, case, movement, crystal, and crown are all signed by Omega. Includes rare original box, with the La Cetrale Boîtes "CB" stamp on the box.
Summary
Any serious watch collection should include have at least one Speedmaster, and this one checks all the boxes for rarity, originality, and condition. The timepiece features all the classic features, such as the “CB-Case”, the "dot-over-90" bezel, the stepped dial with applied logo, and the storied caliber 321 inside.
