Rolex Submariner Ref 1680, 1979, Superb Condition
This is a timeless Rolex Submariner Ref 1680 from 1979. This watch is from the last production of 1680 with a raised acrylic crystal and a bidirectional bezel, giving the watch a distinctly more vintage feel than the subsequent models. The last vintage sub in a superb condition with an unpolished case with sharp edges and a flawless matte dial.
Submariner ref 1680 was introduced in 1969 to replace ref 5513 which had been in production for over 20 years. Ref 1680 was the first submariner to feature a date complication, and it remained in production until the early 1980s. There are three main categories of the 1680: the early models featured an acrylic crystal, matte dial with tritium luminous material and a bezel that turned in both directions. This model was produced until late 1970s. With the early 1680s, the “red sub” featuring the word SUBMARINER in red letters is the rarest, and was only produced for 4 years until 1973. After the 1970s, the 1680 was upgraded with a unidirectional bezel, sapphire crystal, and a shiner dial with the hour markers in a white gold surround.
After the reference 1680, all subsequent date-displaying Submariner references (beginning with the reference 16800) left the Rolex factory with flat crystals made from synthetic sapphire. This feature makes the reference 1680 truly unique, as it is the only date-displaying Submariner to have ever been fitted with an acrylic crystal.
The bracelet is the original late 1970s 93150 solid bracelet stamped on both ends with, the 580 end-links.
