The condition of this rare and discontinued model is like new with original box and papers that are stamped Patek Philippe Salon, Geneva 2010.
The 5165A is one of the rare Aquanaut models, and falls in between the original 36mm model and the contemporary jumbo variants. In our opinion, the 38.5mm case is the perfect size, equally at home with a suit as at the beach. Interestingly, this is the precise model that Paul McCartney of the Beatles wears all the time. As seen the accompanying photo, Sir Paul even wore the watch on his wedding day. He was also seen wearing it in an episode of Carpool Karaoke. This model is fashionable but discreet, bearing the smaller font and the Geneva quality hallmark that are reminiscent of Patek Philippe’s classic references.
The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5165A-001 was first introduced in 1997, and is one of the great marine watches in circulation. It has a carré galbé sealed design and a screwed-down crown that are reminiscent of the Nautilus. Among many firsts, Aquanaut was the first Patek to sport a composite tropical rubber strap with a steel double-deployment clasp. The watch also has scratch-resistant sapphire crystals over the dial and in the back, allowing the movement to be seen. The model is made with a screw-down winding crown with the Patek Philippe Calatrava symbol. The Aquanaut is water resistant to 120 meters/380 feet, and it has a 45-hour power reserve. The 8.5mm thick case, dial and movement are all signed.
The movement of the reference 5165A-001 is the mechanical automatic self-winding caliber 324 SC. The caliber is rhodium-plated, with Fausses Côtes (Geneva Stripes) embellishment, and the seal of Geneva quality hallmark. It is constructed with 29 jewels, 213 components and a straight-line lever escapement. It has an anti-shock device, a 22K gold rotor with the Calatrava symbol, a self-compensating free-sprung flat balance spring, and the patented Patek Gyromax balance that compensates for cold, heat, isochronism and five positions. It includes an index regulator, and the mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz).
This fine Aquanaut model comes complete with the original certificate and brochures & presentation box and outer packaging. We will also include an additional unworn Patek Philippe tropical strap (approx $350 retail) at no additional charge.
