Parthian Watch Company is pleased to have raised over $11,000 in May 2020 to support Connections Mentoring at The Children’s Village. The Grand Prize Winner received a rare 1960s Eberhard Scafodat Ref. 126006-8 automatic watch. Read more below about this worthwhile organization and join their effort.
Connections is a mentoring organization domiciled at The Children’s Village in New York that works with transition-age youth (15-25 years old), their families, and associated organizations to help them build better lives through mentoring relationships. The youth in the program come from diverse backgrounds but face similar challenges, including undocumented immigration status, teenage parenthood and commercial and sexual exploitation, and may also identify as LGBTQ. They may be living in foster care, juvenile justice facilities, residential placement, group homes, independent housing, or in their home communities – many transition through more than one of these settings during their time with Connections.
Connections works with youth throughout New York City and Westchester and relies on volunteers and charitable contributions to provide life coaching through one-on-one relationship development. Connections recruits, screens, trains, and supports adult volunteers who are thoughtfully matched with the youth. The role of the mentor is to listen, teach, support, coach and be there through both exciting and challenging times. The success record of Connections is impressive, with 75% of the mentor/mentee relationships sustaining over time, and over 90% of mentees earn a high school diploma or GED, work in stable jobs, and live in stable housing.
The COVID-19 crisis presents a unique challenge for Connections and the youth they help. As reported by the government and the news media, the economically disadvantaged and communities of color are disproportionately affected by the pandemic: the incidents of disease and mortality are higher, the unemployment rate is well above average, and incidents of domestic trauma and abuse are rising. Because of COVID-19, the already isolated teen mentees are further isolated. During this time, it is particularly meaningful when a mentor connects with his or her mentee, such as when one mentee received a bag of groceries from her mentor, so they could cook and eat the same meal via FaceTime from separate kitchens. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Connections staff are putting in more hours, not less, to sustain and support each mentoring relationship while social distancing.
The Financial Challenge of COVID-19
Children’s Village/Connections was forced to cancel its major annual fundraising event in April because of the quarantine restrictions, and Connections is now in a significant budget deficit for 2020. As a supporter of the group and a member of the New York Community, Parthian Watch Company is raffled a fine and rare vintage Eberhart 1960s Automatic watch, with 100% of the proceeds going to Connections. We hope that enthusiasts will inquire more about helping this organization after reading this page.
